Yu (Rain) Miao is an Assistant Professor at Northeastern University, holding dual appointments in Civil and Environmental Engineering and Marine and Environmental Sciences. He leads the Miao Lab, focusing on environmental biotechnology, microbial ecology, and sustainable resource engineering. His research integrates systems biology, meta-omics, and synthetic biology to address challenges in groundwater remediation, wastewater treatment, and public health. He received his PhD from UCLA (2019) and MS/BS from Nanjing University and Ocean University of China. Honors include the UCLA Chancellor’s Award (2022) and World Microbe Forum Grant (2021).
Research emphasizes microbial community dynamics under environmental stressors, including climate change impacts and contamination. Techniques include top-down meta-omics and bottom-up synthetic biology to modulate ecosystems. Professional affiliations include the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP).
Key publications span biodegradation of 1,4-dioxane, antibiotic resistance tracking, and nanomaterial-enhanced bioremediation. Teaching interests include environmental microbiology and ecological processes. Lab activities involve multi-scale testing and interdisciplinary collaboration to improve environmental sustainability.
