Young Richard Kim is an Associate Professor and Department Head of Classics and Mediterranean Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), with an additional appointment in the Department of History. His expertise focuses on the ancient Mediterranean world, particularly Late Antiquity, Late Ancient Christianity, and Byzantine Studies. Prior to UIC, he served as Director of Educational Programs at the Onassis Foundation USA and held roles at Calvin College.
Dr. Kim earned his B.A. from UCLA (1999), M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan (2004, 2006). His research examines Cyprus in Late Antiquity, with recent projects exploring Cypriot autocephaly, hagiographic traditions, and the Council of Nicaea's legacy.
His publications span monographs, edited volumes, and articles analyzing early Christian heresiography, liturgical practices, and geopolitical theology. He is known for his work on Epiphanius of Cyprus, examining how orthodoxy was constructed through textual and cultural means.
Kim’s scholarly contributions include leadership roles in academic editing, such as co-editing Leadership and Community in Late Antiquity (2020) and overseeing the Cambridge Companion to the Council of Nicaea (2021). His work bridges historical analysis with cultural studies, emphasizing Mediterranean interconnectedness in late ancient contexts.
