Yoshihiro Matsubara is a Professor at the School of Law, Waseda University, specializing in Criminal Law. He holds both a Master of Laws and a Doctor of Laws from Waseda University, where he also completed his undergraduate studies in the Faculty of Laws in 1985.
His research focuses on theoretical and practical aspects of criminal law, including criminal theory, criminal responsibility, and the relationship between crime concepts and punishment theory. Professor Matsubara has published extensively in leading Japanese legal journals, with research covering topics such as fraud, theft, indirect perpetration, continuing offenses, and objective punishment conditions. His publications demonstrate a consistent focus on clarifying legal concepts and their application in judicial practice.
Professor Matsubara maintains a dual affiliation across Waseda University's academic structure, serving in both the Faculty of Law (School of Law) and the Faculty of Political Science and Economics. For the 2025 academic year, he teaches multiple courses including Advanced Criminal Law, Criminal Law Lectures, and specialized seminars for both undergraduate and graduate students. His teaching philosophy emphasizes developing students' ability to identify legal issues, construct logical arguments, and articulate their reasoning clearly.
He is an active member of the Japanese Criminal Law Society and has presented his research at various academic conferences, including the Japanese Society of Legal Philosophy and symposiums on criminal law between Japan and China.
