Ylva Fernaeus is Deputy Director of Umarts and an Associate Professor at Umeå Institute of Design (Umeå University), while also holding a part-time Associate Professor position in Interaction Design at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. She researches tangible and embodied interaction through hybrid crafting practices, focusing on longevity of interactive systems, material understandings, and electricity as a core interaction element.
Her work critically engages with robotic and smart technologies. She leads the Art & AI focus area at TAIGA and serves as Assistant Director of Umeå Centre for Architecture, Design and the Arts. Research projects include 'UmArts Art & AI' (2023-2028) and 'Designing Alternatives for Terms of Service' (2021).
Teaching includes interaction/product design theory and supervision across academic levels. Her publications demonstrate strong trends in sustainable design, materiality studies, and critical approaches to technology.
