Dr. Yitayeh Mengistu is a Postgraduate Research Fellow at the Monash Centre for Health Research and Implementation (MCHRI), a collaborative partnership between Monash University and Monash Health, within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. He leads the Risk Prediction in Women's Health research stream and is actively involved in advancing clinical prediction models using data science.
His research focuses on leveraging big data, machine learning, statistical modeling, and natural language processing to improve the prediction and management of high-risk pregnancies, including gestational and postnatal diabetes. His work also extends to mental health in vulnerable populations, particularly refugees and asylum seekers. He contributes to the development of clinical decision-support tools and learning health systems.
Dr. Mengistu's recent publications (2023–2025) reveal a strong trend in prognostic modeling, electronic health record analysis, and systematic reviews in global mental health. His work bridges clinical medicine, data science, and public health, with applications in maternal care and refugee health.
Scientific Awards and Recognition:
- Recipient of competitive Category 1 grant funding (details under embargo)
Academic Mentorship and Research Leadership: Dr. Mengistu is committed to capacity-building and currently co-supervises two PhD students, with two additional students set to commence in the coming months. His mentorship expands the impact of his doctoral research in women's health risk prediction.
Collaborations and Research Teams: He leads a dedicated research stream at MCHRI and has established global collaborations, including contributions to the LIVING trial for type 2 diabetes prediction post-gestational diabetes, and a partnership with machine learning researchers in Ireland to develop a reciprocal external validation framework for clinical prediction models.
