Dr. Yingzi Yang is a full-time Professor of Developmental Biology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. With a research career spanning over two decades, she focuses on cell signaling mechanisms in embryonic development and adult physiology, particularly in skeletal and liver systems. Her work bridges fundamental discoveries with disease characterization and treatment.
- Harvard Catalyst Profile
- Leadership roles: Head of Developmental Genetics Section, NHGRI; Senior Investigator
- Professional service: Editorial boards of Cell Research, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, and Journal of Molecular Cell Biology
Education:
- BS, Fudan University (Shanghai, China)
- PhD in Molecular Biology, Weill Medical College of Cornell University
Research Focus:
Investigates how Wnt, Hedgehog, and Hippo signaling pathways regulate tissue morphogenesis and homeostasis. Current projects examine:
- Stem cell activation in cranial bone and periodontal repair
- Directional information in development via Wnt/PCP signaling
- Piezo1-mediated mechanotransduction in skeletal systems
Scientific Awards:
- Vincent du Vigneaud Award of Excellence
- Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Fellowship
- NIH Awards
- SCBA Young Investigator
Research Impact:
Her work on Fibrous Dysplasia, funded by a $3M Department of Defense grant (2023), was halted in 2025 due to federal funding withdrawal. This research had broad implications for skeletal diseases and regenerative medicine.
