Yingyi Ma is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. She holds affiliations with Women's and Gender Studies, Applied Statistics, and Chinese Studies programs. Her research focuses on education migration patterns, Asian/Asian American studies, and the intersection of globalization with higher education. Dr. Ma has held significant leadership roles including Director of the Asian/Asian American Studies Program since 2015, Humanity Council member in Arts & Sciences, and Chair of the Faculty of Color at Maxwell School (2021–2023).
Her education includes a Ph.D. and M.S.E. from Johns Hopkins University (2007 and 2005 respectively), along with a B.A. in English from Nanjing University. She has received prestigious awards like the Inaugural Faculty Award of Yang Ni and Xiaoqing Li Endowed Fund (2021–2022) and is currently a Non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution.
Recent work emphasizes China-U.S. educational dynamics, with publications in Columbia University Press, Springer, and Brookings. She actively engages in policy discussions through keynote addresses at institutions like Tsinghua University and Oxford University, focusing on transnational education's transformative power and challenges faced by Asian students.
