Dr. Ying Wang is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Health Informatics within the Australian Institute of Health Innovation at Macquarie University. She specializes in applying machine learning techniques to healthcare data, with a focus on clinical incident reports and electronic medical records.
Dr. Wang earned her PhD in Computer Science with a specialization in Human Activity Recognition and Analysis.
Dr. Wang's research interests span across machine learning applications in healthcare, particularly focusing on the automatic classification and analysis of clinical incidents and IT safety problems in healthcare services. Her work also examines the effects of computer downtime on hospital processes and the safety implications of AI/ML-enabled medical devices. Her research sits at the intersection of computer science, health informatics, and patient safety, addressing critical challenges in healthcare data analysis and system safety.
Dr. Wang's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on applying advanced AI techniques like BERT and other machine learning models to patient safety challenges, particularly in analyzing clinical incident reports and identifying safety events related to AI/ML medical devices. Her work bridges the gap between theoretical AI advancements and practical healthcare applications, with emphasis on real-world implementation challenges including data scarcity, imbalance, and privacy concerns.
Dr. Wang is actively involved in significant research projects including "Improving the health system's response when patients are harmed" (2023-2028) as an Associate Investigator, "Applying LLMs for Analysis of AI/ML Medical Device Approvals and Safety Events" (2023-2026) as Primary Chief Investigator, and "Oracle for Research Fellows" (2023-2024) as Chief Investigator. These projects reflect her leadership in advancing the understanding of AI safety in healthcare settings.
Dr. Wang is part of the Centre for Health Informatics research team at Macquarie University, collaborating with prominent researchers in health informatics including Professor Farah Magrabi, Professor Enrico Coiera, and Dr. David Lyell. Her work contributes to the Australian Institute of Health Innovation's mission to improve healthcare through evidence-based innovation.
