Yimin Lu is an Assistant Professor at Texas Tech University's Whitacre College of Engineering, jointly appointed with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). He leads the Granular Mechanics and Renewable Energy (GMRE) Lab within the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering, focusing on interdisciplinary research at the intersection of granular materials and sustainable energy systems.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Geosystems), Georgia Institute of Technology, USA (2022)
- M.S. in Computational Science and Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA (2021)
- M.S. in Civil Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA (2021)
- B.Eng. in Civil Engineering, China University of Mining and Technology, China (2015)
His research addresses fundamental questions about granular material behavior through three core themes: (1) static/transient/rheological properties of granular systems, (2) interactions between granular media and multiphase fluids, and (3) complex behavior of geomaterials under hydro-thermo-chemo-mechanical conditions. These studies directly support practical applications in energy geotechnics, bioenergy material processing, and natural hazard mitigation.
GMRE Lab employs combined numerical, experimental, theoretical, and data-driven methodologies to enhance infrastructure resilience and sustainable energy security. Research particularly emphasizes climate change adaptation, population growth challenges, and resource depletion mitigation through innovative material science approaches.
