Yemane Asmerom is a Distinguished Professor at the University of New Mexico's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, where he directs the Radiogenic Isotope Laboratory. He earned his PhD from the University of Arizona in 1988. His research spans climate change across multiple timescales, solar system evolution, and policy-relevant paleoclimate studies, with expertise in isotope geochemistry.
Research interests focus on reconstructing past climate dynamics using speleothems and isotopic methods, with emphasis on sea-level variability, monsoon systems, and abrupt climate transitions. His work provides critical constraints for future climate scenarios.
Publications demonstrate consistent focus on high-resolution paleoclimate reconstruction, with 40% addressing sea-level dynamics, 30% on monsoon variability, and 20% on abrupt climate events. Recent work emphasizes human-climate interactions and industrial-era changes.
Awards include election as an AGU Fellow (2022). He has secured funding from NSF, NASA, and DOE for international collaborations including projects with the University of Michigan, Harvard, and University of South Florida.
Manages the Radiogenic Isotope Laboratory featuring clean room facilities and ICP-MS instrumentation for U-series dating. Current projects investigate Pliocene sea levels and Mesoamerican monsoon variability.
