Yasar Onel is a Professor at the University of Iowa and serves on the Vice President for Research Advisory Committee. He holds a PhD from the University of London (1975) and has held roles at Queen Mary University-London, Universities of Neuchatel and Geneva, University of Texas Austin (1986), and has led the University of Iowa's High Energy Physics (HEP) group since 1993. His research focuses on experimental elementary particle physics and nuclear physics, including Higgs boson and supersymmetry (SUSY) searches, heavy ion collisions using the CMS detector at CERN, and detector development for future accelerators.
Research facilities include a hardware lab with computer-controlled photomultiplier test stations, CAMAC/NIM electronics, and LabView data acquisition systems. Students participate in accelerator-based projects, designing detector components and coding, often residing at facilities for extended periods. Graduates pursue careers as university/professional lab staff scientists or in industry.
Recent technical contributions include the CMS Forward Calorimeter and Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC) development. On-campus labs are located in Van Allen Hall (offices 153, 3/4AC, 5AC, 6AC).
