Dr. Yaroslav Savtchouk is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Marquette University, where he leads the Savtchouk Lab. He joined the faculty in October 2018. His research focuses on neuron-astrocyte communication in the cerebellar cortex using advanced techniques like two-photon imaging and electrophysiology. He completed his postdoctoral training at the University of Lausanne under Prof. Andrea Volterra, following a Ph.D. from Penn State University and a B.S. from Franklin and Marshall College.
Dr. Savtchouk's work explores how astrocytes and GABAergic interneurons contribute to cerebellar processing, with a particular emphasis on cerebellar cortex interactions involving stellate cells, basket cells, and Bergmann glia. His lab develops cutting-edge tools, including 3D calcium imaging and signal processing methods, to analyze brain activity in rodent models. He actively mentors students in pre-medical, pre-dental, and biomedical sciences programs and oversees initiatives like the Undergraduate Summer Research Program and the Biomedical Sciences Student Association.
His research has been published in high-impact journals such as Nature, Science, and Nature Reviews Neuroscience, focusing on astrocyte signaling, gliotransmission, and synaptic plasticity. The lab collaborates with institutions worldwide and seeks talented researchers at all levels, including postdocs, technicians, and students.
