Yaovi Mahuton Gildas Hounmanou serves as an Assistant Professor in Veterinary Clinical Microbiology within the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. His research spans pathogen genomics from animal and aquatic environments, climate change implications on disease transmission (particularly cholera and Vibrio infections), and solutions-oriented approaches using omics tools to reduce antimicrobial resistance in low- and middle-income countries. He additionally holds a Postdoctoral Affiliate position at the University of Abomey-Calavi in Benin.
Dr. Hounmanou's research interests focus on microbial genomics, bioinformatics in microbiology, and One Health approaches to antimicrobial resistance surveillance. His work bridges veterinary medicine, environmental science, and public health, with particular emphasis on zoonotic disease transmission pathways and interventions for reducing antimicrobial use in resource-limited settings. His research methodology heavily incorporates advanced genomic and omics technologies to address complex health challenges at the human-animal-environment interface.
His publication record shows significant recent activity with research spanning multiple continents including Denmark, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Colombia, and Benin. His work demonstrates strong international collaboration patterns, particularly with institutions in low- and middle-income countries where antimicrobial resistance presents critical public health challenges. The research output reveals consistent focus areas in pathogen genomics, antimicrobial resistance mechanisms, and environmental transmission pathways.
Within his teaching portfolio, Dr. Hounmanou employs problem-based learning approaches within research-based teaching formats to deliver courses in Microbial Genomics, Bioinformatics in Microbiology, and One Health antimicrobial resistance surveillance. His pedagogical approach emphasizes practical application of genomic tools to real-world public health challenges, particularly those affecting resource-limited settings.
