Yao Chen is an Associate Professor of Costume Design in the Theater department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is an internationally recognized costume and scenic designer with credits across the United States, China, and Central America. Her collaborations include prestigious theaters such as Seattle Children’s Theatre, Trinity Repertory Company, and Orlando Shakespeare Theatre.
Research Interests: Chen specializes in integrating traditional Chinese opera (Kunqu and Peking) with contemporary theater design. Her work spans costume innovation, scenic artistry, and cross-cultural fashion narratives, with active contributions to children’s theater and classical adaptations.
