Yang-Yang Zhou is an Assistant Professor of Government at Dartmouth College's Department of Government, part of the Arts and Sciences School. Her academic work focuses on the political dimensions of migration, including refugee policies, local community impacts, and global development dynamics across East Africa, Central Asia, South America, and the Caribbean. She holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University (2019) and a B.A. from New York University.
Her research explores how migration influences political attitudes, conflict dynamics, and development outcomes. Key themes include refugee integration's effects on local economies, the role of coethnicity in migrant reception, and the interplay between nationalism and refugee attitudes. Her work has been published in top journals like the American Political Science Review and American Journal of Political Science, and featured in media outlets such as the Economist and Foreign Affairs.
Zhou teaches courses on democratization, identity politics, and political economy in non-Western contexts. She co-hosts the Scope Conditions podcast, highlighting emerging scholars in comparative politics. Previously, she served as an Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia and held fellowships as a CIFAR Global Azrieli Scholar and Harvard Academy Scholar. Before academia, she worked as a social work case manager for refugees and asylum-seekers in New York.
