Yang Liu

Associate Professor Yang Liu is an academic in Analytical Chemistry at James Cook University (JCU), affiliated with the College of Science and Engineering and Department of Chemistry. She holds roles as a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) and Queensland Representative for the Electrochemistry Division of RACI. Her research focuses on electrochemical technologies for environmental, biological, and energy applications, particularly nanomaterial-based sensors and plasma electrochemistry for green synthesis. She leads projects on phosphate sensors for cattle samples, plasma electrocatalysis for water pollutants, and renewable energy systems. Dr. Liu has supervised numerous PhD and MSc students in areas like graphene synthesis and mineral exploration. She has received prestigious awards, including the Paul Haddad Medal and Rod Rickards Fellowship, and actively participates in academic committees and editorial boards. Her work bridges innovation in electrochemical methods with real-world applications in sustainability and environmental monitoring.

• Education/Experience: Research Fellow at Nanyang Technological University (2011–2013), progressing through lecturer roles at JCU to her current position since 2025.

Research Interests: Electrochemistry, sensor technology, nanointerfaces, green synthesis, and environmental applications. Her lab develops low-cost sensors using nanostructured materials and explores plasma-based methods for clean water and energy storage.

Grants & Awards: Theo Murphy Initiative Grant (2025), multiple fellowships, and grants supporting student mobility programs like the New Colombo Plan. Her research has led to over 70 publications and collaborations across academia and industry.

• Advising & Grants: Supervises 11 current PhD students and has mentored 8 completed doctoral researchers. Active in securing grants for mineral exploration, sensor development, and sustainability projects.
