Yanbo Hu is a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at London Metropolitan University (LondonMet), affiliated with the School of Social Sciences and Professions. She leads core modules in biological psychology and coding for both undergraduate and MSc programs. Her academic journey includes an MSc in Cognitive Neuroscience from the University of York and a PhD from Royal Holloway, University of London, supported by a full scholarship. Her postdoctoral research at the University of Reading’s Centre for Integrative Neuroscience and Neurodynamics explored emotion regulation mechanisms using fMRI and TMS, uncovering the cerebellum’s potential role in this domain.
Dr. Hu’s education spans key institutions: the University of York (MSc), Royal Holloway (PhD), and Reading (postdoc). She has received notable funding, including a £42k Research Grant from LondonMet (2018), and collaborative support through the National Natural Science Foundation of China (2013). Her earlier awards include travel grants from the Guarantors of Brain and the University of Reading, as well as prestigious scholarships like the Thomas Holloway Research Studentship (2006).
Her research focuses on applied cognitive neuroscience, emphasizing emotion regulation, decision-making, neuroeconomics, and behavioral economics. She investigates the cerebellum’s functionality and its implications for addictive behaviors, particularly internet gaming disorder. Her work employs advanced neuroimaging techniques like fMRI and graph theory to analyze brain networks, contributing to understanding impulsivity and reward mechanisms in addiction. She also explores the impact of internet search on temporal gyrus synchronization, bridging cognitive processes and neural activity.
Dr. Hu’s publications since 2017 include seven peer-reviewed papers in high-impact journals, four selected for the Research Excellence Framework (REF). Her articles highlight interdisciplinary trends, integrating neuroscience with behavioral economics to address addiction vulnerabilities and neurobiological underpinnings of impulsive decisions. She has presented at major conferences, including the Society for Neuroscience and the Cognitive Neuroscience Society, advancing insights into emotion regulation and cerebellar roles.
In collaboration and outreach, she actively fosters UK-China partnerships in internet gaming research and is developing a new research profile on ‘the brain in school’ to expand her work’s societal impact. Her grants and supervisory roles reflect her commitment to both academic rigor and applied neuroscience.
