Yana Hashamova is a dual Professor at The Ohio State University, holding appointments in Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures and Theatre, Film, and Media Arts. She also serves as an Honorary Research Associate at the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and Editor of the Slavic and East European Journal. Her interdisciplinary work bridges cultural studies, gender studies, and post-Soviet media analysis, focusing on how political ideologies shape national and gender identities.
Hashamova earned dual PhDs from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, alongside MA degrees from both UIUC and Sofia University. Her research explores Balkan and Russian cultural production, migration narratives, and the interplay between religion and nationalism. Recent projects include a co-edited volume on Balkan migration dynamics and critical analyses of trafficking representation in media.
Her scholarly contributions span over 30 peer-reviewed articles and books, addressing themes like transgressive female characters in post-Soviet cinema, cinematic representations of national brotherhood, and the socio-political dimensions of human trafficking. Awards highlight her transnational impact, including the Slovenian Academy's honor.
Hashamova's editorial leadership at the SEEJ strengthens academic dialogue in Slavic studies. Her work frequently intersects with public advocacy, particularly in advancing refugee discourse through cultural analysis. Current research emphasizes mobility studies and alternative narratives of nationhood in contested regions.
