Yan Tan

Associate Professor Yan Tan is a faculty member at The University of Adelaide, affiliated with the School of Social Sciences and the Department of Geography, Environment, and Population. He holds concurrent roles as Program Director for the Hugo Population and Migration Studies at the Stretton Institute and the Masters of Environmental Policy and Management program. His research focuses on human geography, migration patterns, climate change adaptation, and environmental policy, with a regional emphasis on China, Australia, and the Asia-Pacific.

Professionally, Tan leads major research initiatives such as the ARC-funded 'China’s Changing Internal Migration' project (2023–2026), exploring urbanization's impact on mobility, and the 'Transnationalism and Diaspora' study (2017–2024), analyzing diaspora dynamics. He also investigates climate resilience through projects like the Australian Fire Danger Rating System evaluation. His work bridges demographic, geographic, and socio-economic data to address migration-environment-development linkages.

Research interests include migration drivers, climate-induced displacement, urbanization's ecological consequences, and carbon emissions mitigation. Tan collaborates with institutions like the China Population and Development Research Center and the Population-Environment Research Network (PERN). He actively supervises postgraduate students and advocates for evidence-based policy in migration and environmental governance.
