Dr. Xun He is a Principal Academic in the Department of Psychology at Bournemouth University, where they have held a permanent position since July 2013. They serve as Head of the Multimodal Immersive NEuro-sensing (MINE) Research Cluster and Head of the Bournemouth EEG Lab, leading cutting-edge research at the intersection of cognitive neuroscience, social psychology, and virtual reality technology.
Dr. He's educational background includes a BSc in Biology from the University of Science and Technology of China (1997) and a PhD in Biophysics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2004). Their postdoctoral training spanned prestigious institutions including Peking University, University of Birmingham, and University of Sussex.
As a cognitive and social neuroscientist, Dr. He's research primarily focuses on visual perception and attention in social contexts, with particular emphasis on face perception in crowds and during social interactions, interpersonal influences on visual attention, and neural correlates of self-prioritization. They are a strong advocate for multi-disciplinary immersive neuroscience research and have developed expertise in EEG techniques. Their recent work has increasingly incorporated virtual reality to study embodied social cognition, particularly examining how social anxiety affects face perception during affective social interactions.
Dr. He's research has significant implications across multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Good Health and Well-being, Quality Education, Reduced Inequalities, and Sustainable Cities and Communities. Their work bridges laboratory research with real-world applications, as evidenced by their involvement in developing AI-assisted emotion recognition systems for mental health applications.
- Credibility in Neuroscience Team Award (British Neuroscience Association, 2023)
- Excellence in Education in Sustainable Development Award (Bournemouth University, 2021)
- Collaborative Team Award (Vice-Chancellor's Staff Awards, Bournemouth University, 2017)
Dr. He actively supervises multiple PhD and EngD students, including Damla Kuleli, Gemma Lovett, Marcia Saul, and Sasha Alexdottir, and has successfully guided several students to completion. They have secured numerous research grants, including projects on social anxiety in VR, EEG methodology, and mental health applications. Dr. He also contributes significantly to the academic community as an editorial board member for Imaging Neuroscience and as a reviewer for multiple funding bodies and journals.
As founder and head of the MINE Research Cluster, Dr. He has established a vibrant research environment that combines traditional neuroscience methods with innovative virtual reality approaches. Their public engagement activities, including presentations at the Dorchester Science Festival and British Science Festival, demonstrate a commitment to sharing neuroscience research with the broader community.
