Dr. Xun Gu is a Professor in the Department of Genetics, Development and Cell Biology at Iowa State University. He holds a B.S. (1985) and M.S. (1987) from Fudan University, China, and a Ph.D. (1996) from the University of Texas, Houston. He joined Iowa State University in 1998 as an Assistant Professor, becoming a Full Professor in 2006. Dr. Gu serves on the editorial boards of Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution and Journal of Experimental Zoology B. He is an AAAS Fellow (2016) and recipient of the Dupont Young Professor Award (2001).
His research focuses on evolutionary and comparative genomics, computational biology, and systems biology. Key areas include functional divergence of genes, transcriptome evolution, and the role of gene duplication in genetic robustness. He developed the DIVERGE software suite for analyzing functional divergence in protein families, which has been widely cited. His lab investigates genomic evolution patterns, including gene content phylogeny and evolutionary dynamics of regulatory networks.
Dr. Gu’s achievements include over 100 publications, foundational work on gene family evolution (e.g., three-wave duplication model), and contributions to understanding primate brain expression divergence. He also explores evolutionary mechanisms in cancer genomics and tumor-specific neoantigens. His research integrates statistical theory, bioinformatics tools, and large-scale genomic data to address fundamental evolutionary questions.
Key awards:
