Xu Chen is a Teaching Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He holds affiliations with the Center for Advanced Electronics Through Machine Learning (CAEML) IUCRC and serves on the Technical Program Committee of the IEEE Conference on Electrical Performance of Electronic Packaging and Systems (EPEPS). Prior to academia, he worked as a hardware engineer at IBM Systems Group (2005-2012) and Apple, focusing on electromagnetics modeling and simulation.
His research integrates stochastic modeling, machine learning, and computational electromagnetics to develop advanced tools for microelectronic circuits and systems design. Key areas include data-driven voltage regulation, reinforcement learning for energy markets, and cybersecurity in power systems. He teaches courses such as ECE 210, ECE 313, ECE 329, and graduate-level microwave circuits.
Recent publications emphasize machine learning applications in energy systems, including reinforcement learning for adaptive learning systems (2022), optimal bidding strategies in electricity markets (2020-2021), and cybersecurity vulnerabilities in grid operations. His work bridges industry and academia, addressing challenges in smart grids and electronic packaging.
Xu Chen has received recognition through awards like the Best Student Paper Award at IEEE MTT-S International Conference (2020) and contributed to initiatives like the CAEML center. His research spans computational science, data analytics, and machine learning applied to both electronics and energy systems.
