Xiaozhou Ruan is an Assistant Professor of Earth & Environment at Boston University, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences and the Marine Program. His research focuses on physical oceanography, particularly small-scale ocean dynamics and their role in large-scale circulation. He employs theoretical fluid dynamics, numerical modeling, and observational analysis to study submesoscale currents, boundary layers, and turbulent mixing.
Education: PhD in Earth & Environmental Sciences from California Institute of Technology (2019).
Research Interests include Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, Ocean Mixing, Coastal Dynamics, Southern Ocean Processes, and Abyssal Circulation. He leads a research group exploring unresolved challenges in ocean physics using interdisciplinary approaches.
Recent work emphasizes diapycnal upwelling mechanisms, eddy stirring impacts, and abyssal circulation modeling. His studies contribute to understanding climate-relevant ocean processes such as heat transport and tracer dispersion.
Advising and grants focus on training early-career researchers in ocean dynamics. Active in the Marine Program at BU, he collaborates on projects linking small-scale physics to global climate systems.
