Xiaoyu Zhang

Xiaoyu Zhang is a Research Assistant in Prof. Massimo Bertolini's group at the Faculty of Mathematics, University of Duisburg-Essen (ESAGA), specializing in number theory and arithmetic geometry. He obtained his PhD in 2019 from Université Paris 13 under Jacques Tilouine.

His research focuses on p-adic automorphic forms, modularity lifting theorems, theta correspondence, and Iwasawa theory, with significant contributions to Selmer groups, Bloch-Kato conjectures, and special values of L-functions. His work bridges algebraic geometry and number theory through advanced techniques in Galois representations and automorphic forms.

His publication trends reveal a sustained investigation into modular forms and their arithmetic applications, particularly examining p-adic properties of theta lifts, convergence of indefinite series, and structural theorems for orthogonal/symplectic groups. Recent work emphasizes connections between geometric constructions (log abelian varieties, Hecke orbits) and deep conjectures in Iwasawa theory.

Teaching & Mentoring:

• Regularly teaches advanced courses including Modular Forms (Parts 1-2), Master Seminars on Number Theory (Euler systems, elliptic curves, modularity theorems)
• Has led 15+ courses/seminars since 2019 covering automorphic forms, Galois representations, and arithmetic geometry

He is actively involved in the ESAGA research group, collaborating on projects related to the Langlands program and arithmetic of Shimura varieties. Zhang is currently on the academic job market for Fall 2025 positions.
