معرفی
Xiaoying Bian is a Professor of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at the State Key Laboratory of Microbial Technology, Shandong University, where she has been employed since July 2015. She also serves as Supervisor of Doctorate Candidates and Supervisor of Master's Candidates. Her research focuses on harnessing microbial genetics to discover and engineer natural products with pharmaceutical potential through innovative genome editing technologies.
Education:
- PhD in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Saarland University, Germany (2013)
- MS in Plant Protection, Northwest A&F University, China (2008)
- BS in Plant Protection, Northwest A&F University, China (2005)
Dr. Bian's research centers on synthetic biology approaches for microbial natural products discovery. Her work develops genome editing and synthetic biology enabling technologies to unlock 'hidden' biosynthetic pathways in microbes. She investigates genome mining for novel natural products, biosynthetic engineering, and genome editing of microbes and microbiomes. Her research bridges microbiology, genetics, and pharmaceutical development to discover new drug leads from previously inaccessible microbial sources, with particular focus on non-model bacterial species that have been difficult to genetically manipulate.
Dr. Bian's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on genome editing technologies, particularly Recombineering and CRISPR-based systems, applied to microbial natural product discovery. Her work spans multiple bacterial genera including Burkholderia, Streptomyces, and Bacillus, with emphasis on nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPS), polyketide synthases (PKS), and siderophore biosynthesis. Her research shows increasing interdisciplinary collaboration with chemists, bioinformaticians, and ecologists, reflecting the complex nature of modern natural product discovery.
Scientific Awards:
- 2022 The 13th Qingdao Youth Science and Technology Award
- 2019 Recipients of the Shandong Provincial Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars
- 2015 Qilu Youth Scholar Professor, Shandong University
- 2012 Arthur E. Schwarting Award for Best Paper in the Journal of Natural Products
- 2022 Natural Product Reports Emerging Investigator Lectureship Nomination
- Education Ministry '2019 Annual Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award' Natural Science Award Second Prize
Dr. Bian has supervised numerous doctoral and master's students through their research in microbial biotechnology. Her laboratory has received significant funding including the Shandong Provincial Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. She serves as Managing Editor for Engineering Microbiology journal and is on the editorial board of Microbiology Bulletin. Her research team includes postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, and master's students working collaboratively on microbial genome editing and natural product discovery projects, with several successful graduates now pursuing independent research careers.
Dr. Bian leads a dynamic research team at the State Key Laboratory of Microbial Technology, comprising multiple postdoctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, and master's students. Her laboratory focuses on developing cutting-edge genome editing tools specifically tailored for non-model microorganisms, which has enabled the discovery of numerous novel natural products with pharmaceutical potential. The team maintains strong collaborations with researchers across China and internationally, particularly with institutions in Germany where Dr. Bian completed her doctoral studies, and has established itself as a leading center for microbial natural product research in China.
