Xiaosong Ma

Xiaosong Ma is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at North Carolina State University and a faculty member at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. She received her PhD in Computer Science from the University of Illinois in 2003 and was honored with the 2012 Early Career Academic Achievement Alumni Award by her alma mater.

Her research addresses the critical I/O performance bottleneck in scientific computing through innovations in storage systems and parallel data management. Key focus areas include developing novel technologies for improving perceived I/O performance, reducing data movement costs in time and energy, and optimizing resource usage for parallel applications. Recent work explores SSD integration in HPC environments for out-of-core computation and in-situ analytics, alongside automatic parallel I/O benchmark extraction from large-scale applications. She also investigates cloud computing economics for HPC workloads, conducting cost-benefit analyses between cloud instances and in-house clusters while pioneering semi-elastic cloud architectures and automated I/O configuration systems.
