Xiaoming Yu is an Associate Professor at CREOL, The College of Optics and Photonics, University of Central Florida. His research focuses on ultrafast laser processing, laser-matter interaction, and advanced manufacturing. He leads a research group developing novel laser-based technologies for micro/nano processing and additive manufacturing.
Dr. Yu holds a BS in Physics from Nankai University (2008), MS in Plasma Physics from Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (2012), and PhD in Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering from Kansas State University (2016). His work bridges fundamental physics and applied engineering, emphasizing electron dynamics control and material modification mechanisms.
Research interests include laser-induced nonequilibrium phenomena, ultrafast laser micro/nano processing, and laser-based additive manufacturing. Notable contributions include parametric models for hydrophobic metal surface fabrication and studies on nanosecond laser-induced amorphization in silicon.
His awards include the 2022 SPIE Best Student Paper Award and 2019 NSF CAREER Award. He advises graduate students in Optics PhD programs and undergraduate research assistants, focusing on topics like Bessel-beam arrays and structured light fabrication.
Key projects include high-throughput volumetric microfabrication, Bessel-beam activated photopolymerization, and laser parameter optimization via artificial neural networks. His lab explores both fundamental material responses and industrial-scale manufacturing applications.
