Dr. Xiaofeng Jia is an Assistant Professor in the School of Media & Communication at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), part of the College of Arts & Sciences. Her research focuses on strategic communication, health communication, and quantitative methodology, with a particular emphasis on social media and emerging technologies like AI chatbots. She teaches courses including Social Media and Society, Qualitative Research Methods, and Advanced Social Scientific Research Methods.
Dr. Jia holds a Ph.D. from the University of Miami and an M.A. from Goldsmiths, University of London. Her work explores how message characteristics and content creators influence audience engagement on platforms such as AI chatbots, and examines theoretical frameworks explaining attitude and behavior change through media exposure.
Her research interests span health communication (e.g., pandemic communication, vaccine hesitancy), digital media strategies, and computational methods. Notable projects include analyzing information overload during the pandemic, the role of anthropomorphic chatbots in customer interactions post-social exclusion, and improving clinical trial recruitment for underrepresented groups like African American and Black Caribbean populations.
Dr. Jia has contributed to journals including Journal of Internet Commerce, Health Communication, and Health Promotion International. Her lab affiliations include the School's Global Social Media Influencer Research Lab.
