Associate Professor Dr. Xiaobo Chen is affiliated with the School of Engineering at RMIT University's City Campus. He holds a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Deakin University (2009) and has held roles at Monash University and RMIT, including Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor.
His research focuses on surface modification and coating technologies for light metals, addressing corrosion and biomedical applications. Key industry collaborations include Baosteel-Australia Joint Research Centre, Mitsubishi Heavy Industry, and BASF Coatings GmbH. He leads the HDR Manager role for Manufacturing, Materials, and Mechatronics disciplines.
- Research Themes: Corrosion mechanisms, biomaterials, additive manufacturing, antimicrobial coatings
- Funding: ARC grants (DECRA, DP, LP) as Lead Chief Investigator
- Industry Projects: 6 completed contracts with industry partners
Teaching interests include surface engineering, nanomaterials, and electrochemistry. Current research explores self-cleaning coatings, high-entropy alloys, and 3D-printed biomedical implants.
