Xiao Zhang is a Research Fellow in the Department of Neuroscience at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. Based at Blegdamsvej 3B, Copenhagen, Zhang conducts cutting-edge research on neurovascular mechanisms with focus on aging and neurodegenerative disorders. Contact: xiao.zhang@sund.ku.dk | +4535325793.
Zhang's research spans neurovascular biology, aging neuroscience, and cellular mechanisms in brain disorders. Key investigations include calcium signaling in vascular mural cells, pericyte dynamics in capillary regulation, and glial contributions to neural circuit dysfunction. Recent work reveals how aging remodels neurovascular coupling in awake brains and links precapillary sphincter impairment to reduced cerebral blood flow.
Analysis of publications (2018-2025) shows consistent focus on neurovascular unit pathophysiology across aging models and diseases like Huntington's. Zhang employs in vivo imaging, electrophysiology, and molecular techniques to uncover mechanisms involving NG2 glia, pericytes, and vascular cells. High-impact findings in Nature Aging (2023) and Nature Communications (2021) demonstrate translational relevance for age-related cognitive decline.
Zhang maintains active collaborations with leading neuroscientists including Cai, Lauritzen, and Tong at the University of Copenhagen, evidenced by multi-author publications in top journals. Research outputs show significant scholarly impact with 80+ citations for the 2021 Nature Communications paper and media coverage in neuroscience news outlets.
