Xiangyan Zeng serves as Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Computer Science, College of Arts and Sciences at Fort Valley State University (FVSU), where she has held continuous faculty positions since 2008 following postdoctoral appointments at UC Davis and California State University, Northridge.
Her academic credentials include:
- Ph.D. in Computer Science (Intelligent Systems), University of the Ryukyus, Japan (2004)
- M.E. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, University of the Ryukyus, Japan (2001)
- M.E. in Computer Applications, Hefei University of Technology, China (1990)
- B.E. (Honors) in Computer Science and Information Engineering, Hefei University of Technology, China (1987)
Dr. Zeng's research program integrates Machine Learning, Pattern Recognition, and Computer Vision methodologies with practical applications in biomedical imaging and remote sensing. She develops advanced techniques including Support Vector Machines, Neural Networks, and Genetic Algorithms for feature extraction, texture analysis, and 3D reconstruction problems, with emphasis on statistical pattern recognition and invariant representations.
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications (2007-2016) reveals consistent focus on structural biology applications through 2D crystal image processing, where she pioneered iterative transform algorithms for 3D reconstruction and automated lattice determination. Her work bridges Independent Component Analysis with texture representation for illumination/rotation invariance, demonstrating cross-disciplinary impact in both computer vision and structural biology communities.
