Xavier Ortiz Almirall is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Analytical and Applied Chemistry at the IQS School of Engineering, Ramon Llull University. His research focuses on environmental chemistry, toxicology, and analytical methodologies for detecting pollutants in aquatic systems. He leads work on cyanotoxins, persistent organic pollutants, and their impacts on ecosystems and human health. Key projects include monitoring pharmaceuticals in wastewater, assessing PCB contamination, and studying neurotoxic effects of cyanotoxins in zebrafish.
Ortiz Almirall collaborates with interdisciplinary teams on projects like CHEMIPARK (passive sampling methodologies) and GESPA (environmental process engineering). His lab develops advanced analytical techniques such as GC-FID methods for fatty acid analysis and LC-QTOF MS for microcystin quantification. He has contributed to over 35 peer-reviewed articles, addressing topics ranging from microplastic toxin interactions to fire extinguishing contaminant formation.
His research emphasizes real-world applications, including ensuring fish safety amid algal blooms and mitigating toxin accumulation in food systems. Current projects extend to 2027, focusing on environmental pollutant responses and sustainable water management strategies.
