Xavier Janson is a Research Professor at the Bureau of Economic Geology within the Jackson School of Geosciences at The University of Texas at Austin. He specializes in Carbonates sedimentology, sequence stratigraphy, petrophysics of carbonate rocks, and seismic modeling of carbonate systems. His work focuses on modern depositional environments, reservoir characterization, and the application of seismic techniques to interpret carbonate reservoirs.
His research programs include the Reservoir Characterization Research Laboratory (RCRL), where he examines carbonate slope systems, paleokarst reservoirs, and mixed carbonate-siliciclastic systems. Notable projects include ExxonMobil 3D Lidar Modeling and studies of the Tarim Basin’s seismic characterization. He has advised numerous graduate students, including Joshua Malone (Ph.D. expected 2026) and Taufik Al Amin (M.S. expected 2025).
Janson’s scientific contributions include the SEPM Best Poster Award (2007) and editorial roles in journals such as Sedimentology and The Sedimentary Record. His research spans locations like the Permian Basin, Tarim Basin, and the Mut Basin in Turkey, emphasizing field-based integration with 3D modeling and seismic interpretation.
His recent publications (2020–2024) highlight advancements in seismic reservoir characterization, chronostratigraphy, and carbonate depositional systems. He also collaborates on projects linking depositional environments to reservoir quality and mechanical properties in the Delaware Basin.
