Xavier Fernàndez-Busquets

Xavier Fernàndez-Busquets is the Head of the Nanomalaria Joint Unit at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and the Barcelona Centre for International Health Research (CRESIB). He holds a PhD in Biochemistry from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and has conducted postdoctoral research at institutions including the Friedrich Miescher Institute (Switzerland), the Marine Biological Laboratory (USA), and the Universitat de Barcelona. His work focuses on nanomedicine applications for malaria treatment, antimalarial drug delivery systems, and biomaterials development.

Research interests revolve around leveraging nanotechnology to combat malaria and other parasitic diseases. Key themes include targeted drug delivery, protein aggregation inhibitors like YAT2150, and innovative formulations such as liposomes and nanohyaluronan. His recent studies highlight advances in curcumin-loaded nanocarriers for wound healing and synergistic antimalarial therapies combining plant extracts with nanoemulsions.

Publications emphasize drug efficacy across multiple stages of malaria parasites, including blood-stage inhibition and ookinete targeting. Awards include the Ramón y Cajal grant (2001). Collaborations span academia and industry, with a focus on translating nanomedicine into clinical applications for global health challenges.
