Wynand Steyn

Prof. Wynand Steyn serves as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology and holds the position of Full Professor in Civil Engineering at the University of Pretoria. He has been with the institution since February 2009 and earned his PhD in Civil Engineering from the same university in 2001.

His research program focuses on transformative approaches in infrastructure engineering:

• Nanotechnology-modified materials for enhanced pavement performance
• Digital twin applications for road network management
• Sustainable construction using alternative materials like cassava peel ash
• Accelerated pavement testing methodologies
• Intelligent transportation systems and AI applications

Recent publications demonstrate strong emphasis on nanotechnology applications in road construction, with 8 of 15 most recent articles exploring nano-modified emulsions (NME) and their implementation. Secondary focus areas include digital twins for infrastructure (3 publications) and sustainable material alternatives (2 publications). Research consistently addresses practical implementation challenges while advancing materials science fundamentals.
