Wulf Schirmer is a distinguished academic in architectural history, affiliated with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). He served as Director of the Institute for Architectural History (1971–2002) and Dean of the Department of Architecture (1974–1976). His career spans extensive archaeological and architectural research in Anatolia and the Near East.
Education: Studied architecture at TH Hannover (Diploma 1963), earned a doctorate at TU Berlin (under Ernst Heinrich and Kurt Bittel), and completed habilitation in 1970.
Research focuses on ancient architectural excavation and preservation, including leadership in projects at Hattusa (Hittite capital), Cayönü-Tepesi (Neolithic site), Pergamon, and Castel del Monte. He directed the sub-project on building technology within Collaborative Research Centre 315 and led excavations at Göllüdag in Central Anatolia. Since 1975, he served on the Central Directorate of the German Archaeological Institute and co-founded the Southwest German Archive for Architecture and Civil Engineering.
Professional roles include editorship of architectura (journal for architectural history) and leadership in international archaeological expeditions.
