Wouter Van Bockhaven

Prof. Dr. Wouter Van Bockhaven is a Professor at Antwerp Management School where he leads the competence center 'Smart Ecosystems & Networks'. His academic work focuses on institutional entrepreneurship for market creation and ecosystem transformation, with extensive research in innovation ecosystems, performance measurement systems, and stakeholder mobilization in B2B markets.

His research spans multiple domains including port logistics, digital transformation, and sustainable business practices. Van Bockhaven has conducted case studies in Dutch and Belgian B2B sectors including the port, pharmaceutical, diagnostic, steel processing, and installation industries, complemented by surveys of entrepreneurs and employees in Flanders.

His recent work emphasizes ecosystem strategies for societal transitions such as climate resilience, the circular economy, digital transition of ports, and the energy transition in Flanders. He is particularly known for developing the Smart Port Maturity Model™ (SPMM) which has been implemented in ports including Moerdijk and North Sea Port.

Van Bockhaven has led numerous significant research projects including Horizon Europe, SBO, Interreg, Erasmus+, VLAIO studies, and ESF initiatives. His research methodology combines qualitative case studies with quantitative survey approaches to examine institutional entrepreneurship and ecosystem transformation.

As an educator, he teaches innovation, strategy, and research methodology in Master's and doctoral programs at Antwerp Management School, the Royal Military Academy, and Marquette University. He is also the founder of TalentLogiQs, a University of Antwerp spin-off specializing in tools for sustainable career management.

His research has practical applications in port logistics and smart ecosystem development, with the Smart Port Maturity Model serving as a strategic tool for ports to assess digital maturity and develop innovation roadmaps. His work bridges academic research with practical business applications, particularly in the transformation of traditional industries through digital innovation.
