Wolfgang Lutz is Founding Director of the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital, a collaboration between IIASA, the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and the University of Vienna. He is a Professor at the University of Vienna's Department of Demography and Senior Advisor for IIASA's Population and Just Societies Program, after directing its World Population Program from 1994–2020.
- PhD in Demography, University of Pennsylvania
- Habilitation in Demography and Social Statistics, University of Vienna
His research integrates multidimensional demography, focusing on interactions between population aging, education, and labor force dynamics. Key contributions include redefining dependency ratios to account for productivity via education, showing that education-selective migration and labor participation policies can mitigate aging-related economic burdens.
He has published over 280 articles in top journals like Science, Nature, and PNAS, and authored 27 books including Advanced Introduction to Demography (2021). Recent work with Nature Sustainability (2019) emphasizes expanding sustainability science to address SDG implementation gaps.
Scientific Honors:
- Wittgenstein Prize (Austria's highest scientific award)
- Two ERC Advanced Grants
- Mattei Dogan Award (IUSSP)
- Mindel C. Sheps Award (Population Association of America)
- Honorary Doctorate, Chulalongkorn University
He serves in multiple Academies (Austrian Academy of Sciences, US National Academy of Sciences, Leopoldina, etc.) and was a UN-appointed member of the Global Sustainable Development Report (2019) Independent Group of Scientists. His demographic models (e.g., CEPAM-Mic) incorporate education and labor-force participation, challenging simplistic age-based dependency ratio assumptions.
