Wim Vermaas

Wim Vermaas is the Foundation Professor in the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University (ASU), with additional roles as a Senior Global Futures Scientist. He holds a D.Sc. in Agricultural Sciences from Wageningen University, Netherlands. His research focuses on cyanobacteria, particularly Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, exploring their molecular biology, photosynthetic processes, and applications in biofuel and chemical production. His lab investigates thylakoid membrane synthesis and engineering cyanobacteria to produce renewable raw materials.

Vermaas is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and recognized at ASU for research and teaching excellence. He has led numerous grants from agencies like DOE and NSF, collaborating on projects like microbial electro-photosynthesis and cyanobacterial biofuel systems. His work bridges fundamental biology with applied biotechnology, emphasizing sustainability and renewable energy solutions.
