William Smith

William Smith is an Assistant Professor at the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, University College Dublin (UCD). He holds a BE and PhD from UCD. His roles include Director of the UCD Formula Student Programme (2000–2008) and School Head of Teaching & Learning (2013–ongoing). He has contributed to policy committees and academic leadership within UCD.

Research Focus: Energy systems, emissions analysis, and thermodynamics. Key areas include road transport emissions, distributed combustion, solar thermal optimization, and low-carbon technologies. His work addresses climate impact, energy efficiency, and sustainable engineering solutions.

Teaching: Coordinates over 20 modules, including Energy Engineering, Alternative Energy Vehicles, Thermodynamics, and Automotive Systems. Emphasizes core concepts, student engagement, and innovative pedagogy.
