William P. Hetrick is a Provost Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington, College of Arts & Sciences. He leads the Hetrick Lab, which is part of the Clinical and Cognitive Neuroscience Center (CCNC), a laboratory co-led by Drs. Hetrick, Wisner, Moussa-Tooks, and O'Donnell with locations in Bloomington and Indianapolis.
Dr. Hetrick's educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from The Ohio State University (1999)
- M.A. in Experimental Psychology from California State University (1993)
- B.A. in Psychology from Point Loma Nazarene College (1987)
Dr. Hetrick's research focuses on the neural mechanisms underlying schizophrenia spectrum disorders, with particular emphasis on cerebellar function, temporal processing, and sensory gating. His work employs EEG, event-related brain potentials, MRI, and clinical-neuropsychological assessment. He conducts human clinical research in Kenya and Uganda, Africa, developing culturally-appropriate symptom and behavioral measures. His research has made significant contributions to understanding cerebellar-dependent associative learning deficits, temporal processing dysfunction, and sensory gating abnormalities in schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
Dr. Hetrick's publication record demonstrates consistent focus on neurophysiological underpinnings of schizophrenia, particularly examining how cerebellar dysfunction contributes to cognitive deficits. His work spans multiple methodologies including eyeblink classical conditioning, temporal processing tasks, and ERP measurements of sensory gating. The research shows strong translational potential, with findings that bridge basic neuroscience and clinical applications for schizophrenia treatment.
Dr. Hetrick actively mentors graduate students and is currently reviewing applications for Fall 2026 admission to the Clinical Science program at Indiana University.
The Hetrick Lab is part of the Clinical and Cognitive Neuroscience Center (CCNC), which conducts research on psychopathology with focus on schizophrenia and related disorders. The lab runs locations both at Indiana University Bloomington and at IU Health in Indianapolis, facilitating collaboration between basic science and clinical settings.
