William P. Berlinghoff is a mathematician and educator. He holds a Ph.D. in mathematics from Wesleyan University. He previously served as a Professor of Mathematics at Southern Connecticut State University and currently holds the position of Visiting Professor at Colby College. His work focuses on the history of mathematics and its pedagogical applications. Alongside Fernando Q. Gouvêa, he co-authored the influential textbook Math Through the Ages: A Gentle History for Teachers and Others, which provides an accessible overview of mathematical history, exploring topics like algebraic symbols, negative numbers, and the metric system. The book includes 25 independent sketches that contextualize key mathematical concepts within their historical development, supplemented by questions and projects to deepen understanding.
