William Owen is an Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo, currently serving as Associate Chair of Undergraduate Studies. He has held roles such as Associate Director of First Year Engineering (2009–2021). Owen holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto (2005), a Master's in Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia (2001), and a Bachelor's in Engineering Physics with a Mechanical Option from UBC (1990).
His research focuses on robotics, mechatronics, trajectory planning, and engineering education. He explores topics such as mobile-robotic manipulators, multi-armed robotic systems, and control systems design. Recent teaching includes courses like GENE 101 (Strategies and Skills for Academic Success), ME 360 (Introduction to Control Systems), and MTE 481/482 (Mechatronics Design Projects).
His publications span robotics applications, mechatronics, and manufacturing automation. He is actively involved in curriculum development and undergraduate education initiatives but is not currently accepting graduate students.
