William M. R. Simpson is an Assistant Professor (Research) in the Department of Philosophy at Durham University, holding concurrent positions as a Research Fellow at the University of Oxford and a Research Associate at the University of Cambridge. He holds dual doctorates: a PhD in Philosophy from Cambridge (2020) and a PhD in Physics from St Andrews (2014). His research bridges philosophy of physics, metaphysics, and philosophy of mind, particularly focusing on hylomorphic approaches to quantum theory and the mind-body problem. Funded by the Leverhulme Trust as an Early Career Fellow, his current project explores cosmopsychism via cosmic hylomorphism.
Education includes an MPhys in Theoretical Physics & Mathematics (St Andrews, 2010), MPhil in History and Philosophy of Science (Cambridge, 2016), and two PhDs. He has held academic appointments across the UK, USA, Europe, and the Middle East, including postdoctoral roles at Cambridge, Weizmann Institute, and UT Austin. Notable honors include the Cardinal Mercier Prize (2021), Expanded Reason Award (2020), and Springer Thesis Prize (2014).
Research interests emphasize quantum ontology, causal powers, and the integration of ancient metaphysics with modern science. He has organized major conferences like 'Why Middle-Sized Matters' (Oxford, 2024) and co-edited volumes on neo-Aristotelian metaphysics. His work intersects science and religion, particularly through grants from the Templeton Foundation and the Civitas Institute.
