William J. Layton is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh, affiliated with The Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. He holds a PhD from the University of Tennessee. His research focuses on numerical analysis and scientific computing, particularly in developing novel algorithms and models for understanding fluid motion, turbulence, and environmental systems. He has advised numerous MS and undergraduate students and directed 43 PhD students, many of whom have achieved notable academic success. His work addresses challenges such as modeling large-scale fluid phenomena, contaminant transport between surface and groundwater, and computational methods for climate studies.
