Dr. William J. Endres is the Richard and Elizabeth Henes Professor and Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Michigan Technological University (MTU), serving as the Senior Capstone Design Program Director and Manufacturing/Industrial (MI) Area Director. He holds a PhD, MS, and BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research focuses on cutting mechanics, machining dynamics, and mechanistic modeling, particularly in tool wear analysis, machine-tool stability, and high-speed machining. He has pioneered advancements in tooling design, including micro-jet cooling systems and rotary cutting inserts.
Dr. Endres has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the NSF CAREER Award (1998), SME’s Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award (1999), and ASME’s Blackall Machine Tool and Gauge Award (1997). He founded Machining Analysis Technologies, LLC (1999) and Endres Machining Innovations, LLC (2004), which commercialize innovations in cutting tools and machining processes. His patents address cutting tool stabilization, high-pressure fluid storage, and tool wear reduction.
His recent work emphasizes dynamic modeling of machining interfaces, texture-engineered joints, and high-pressure hydrogen storage solutions. Dr. Endres contributes to academic leadership as an Associate Editor for the ASME Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering and through roles in professional societies.
