William H Huber is an Associate Professor of Game Studies at Falmouth University, where he leads courses in Game Development, Animation, and Esports. Previously, he was Head of the Centre for Excellence in Game Education at Abertay University and an Assistant Professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. His research focuses on game aesthetics, media philosophy, and historical games, with a particular interest in Japanese RPGs and virtual worlds.
Education: PhD in Art and Media History, Theory, and Criticism from the University of California, San Diego (2013); BA in Cognitive Science from UC Berkeley (1998).
Research interests include game aesthetics, software studies, historical games, and the intersections of art and games. He has published widely on topics like Final Fantasy series analysis, East Asian cultural representation in games, and game education trends. His work spans academic articles, conference presentations, and keynote addresses, including a 2024 keynote on historical games at DiGRA.
He has advised numerous graduate students and contributed to professional engagement through roles like former president of the Digital Games Research Association (DiGRA). His exhibitions include curating Small Worlds & CD-ROMs at Dundee Contemporary Arts and presenting game-related art installations internationally.
Teaching focuses on narrative design, historical/political games, and cultural history for game creators. He leads programs in Game Development, Animation, and Esports at Falmouth.
