William Gutheil

William Gutheil is a Professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Pharmacy. His primary research investigates antibacterial agents targeting bacterial cell wall biosynthesis, enzyme mechanisms of penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), and resistance mechanisms like vancomycin resistance. He developed innovative LC-MS/MS assays for analyzing bacterial metabolites and established the Drug Discovery and Metabolomics LC-MS/MS shared instrumentation facility.

His laboratory focuses on antibacterial drug discovery, including the identification of D-boroAla as a novel antibacterial agent targeting D-Ala-D-Ala ligase. Research encompasses analytical method development for metabolic profiling, enzyme kinetics studies, and screening of compound libraries against resistant pathogens. Dr. Gutheil holds degrees in Biochemistry from Cal Poly and Bio-Organic Chemistry from USC, with postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School and Tufts University.
