William Gosling is Professor of Palaeoecology & Biogeography at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Science, Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics. His research characterizes ecosystems through pollen spectra analysis, focusing on Amazonian forests and savannahs to reconstruct Quaternary environmental changes.
Research interests center on pollen-vegetation relationships in Neotropical ecosystems. Key areas include differentiating rainforests, dry forests, and savannahs using modern pollen signatures; developing field methodologies for tropical pollen sampling; and analyzing ecosystem responses to historical climate and CO₂ fluctuations. Work integrates spatial-temporal analysis with statistical modeling.
Publications demonstrate consistent focus on palaeoenvironmental reconstruction through pollen analysis. Recent work expands data accessibility through FigShare repositories. Trends include methodological refinement and multi-proxy approaches to ecosystem characterization.
Advises PhD students including Charlotte Miller and Macarena Cardenas. Manages fieldwork in Noel Kempff Mercado National Park, Bolivia, with research teams investigating pollen-vegetation correlations.
