William G. Morice, II

William G. Morice, II, M.D., Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. He serves as a pathologist specializing in hematopathology with a particular focus on large granular lymphocytic leukemia (LGLL) and bone marrow pathology. Dr. Morice has held numerous leadership positions including Co-Chair of the Industry Advisory Group for Access to Covid Tools Accelerator-Diagnostics Pillar and membership on the Mayo Clinic Management Team.

Dr. Morice's research interests center on hematopathology, particularly large granular lymphocytic leukemia, flow cytometry applications in diagnostic pathology, bone marrow pathology, plasma cell disorders, and lymphoproliferative disorders. His work has significantly advanced diagnostic criteria for LGLL, including development of flow cytometry methods for detecting T-cell receptor beta constant chain monotypia and NK-cell receptor restriction. He has contributed extensively to the World Health Organization classification of hematolymphoid tumors, serving as a key contributor to the 5th edition focused on lymphoid neoplasms.

His publication record demonstrates a strong focus on diagnostic methodology in hematopathology, with recent work expanding into COVID-19 diagnostics and serology. Dr. Morice has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles spanning from 1993 to 2024, with his most recent work examining LGLL diagnostics, WHO classification systems, and SARS-CoV-2 serology and immune responses. His research consistently bridges laboratory medicine with clinical applications, particularly in developing and validating diagnostic tools for hematological malignancies.

His work has established important diagnostic criteria and methodologies that have become standard practice in hematopathology laboratories.

Dr. Morice leads or participates in multiple research teams focused on hematopathology diagnostics, including the Bone Marrow Pathology Group and the CI and Error Reduction Team within the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. His laboratory work has been instrumental in developing flow cytometry techniques for diagnosing lymphoproliferative disorders and plasma cell malignancies.
